How to Submit a Demo to a Record Label

A label receives far more music than it can hear in full. Your demo has a better chance when it reaches the right person, plays at once and says in a few lines who you are and why this label. Send fewer, better-aimed demos rather than the same email to every address you can find.

Before you start

Pick two or three finished tracks that show your sound at its best, with the strongest one first. Check that each label releases music like yours and read its submission instructions. Have a short biography, one photo and your public links ready.

Steps

  1. Follow each label’s route

Use the submission method the label asks for, whether that is a form, an upload page or an email address. Some labels on Beatro show a Send a demo section on their website that opens an upload page; use it when it is there. Do not send the same music again through every channel the label has.

  2. Make one private listening link

Open Private listening in your Beatro dashboard and create a page with your chosen tracks in order. Add a password if the music is unreleased and turn downloads off unless the label asks for files. One link plays in the browser, so nobody has to download a folder to hear you.

  3. Write a short pitch

Address the person by name where you can. In three or four sentences say who you are, what the tracks are, why this label fits and what you have done so far, such as shows, plays or a previous release. Put the listening link near the top, with the password in the same message if you set one.

  4. Follow up once

Note who you sent the link to and when. If you hear nothing after two or three weeks, send one short follow-up in the same thread. Keep releasing and playing in the meantime, and update the listening page if you replace a track so the link you sent stays current.

Check

Before sending, open the listening link in a private browser window to check it plays, the order is right and the password works. Read the pitch aloud once; if any sentence does not help the label decide, take it out.
